New release by Marissa Farrar!

Out Today! Cut Too Deep by Marissa Farrar

Here's the blurb for this exciting new romance:

Guys like Ryker Russo don't notice girls like Jenna Armstrong.
Constantly on the move, Jenna doesn't want to settle down anywhere. As long as her latest motel room has a television, wi-fi, and a vending machine, she will make do. It isn't just Jenna's curves that make her self conscious. Beneath her clothes she hides a secret, one that she is running from.
But when her car breaks down, leaving her without a mode of transport to get to the next town, mechanic Ryker seems to show an interest in her. With his muscles, tattoos, and piercings, Ryker has trouble literally written all over him. Jenna can't understand why he would want to be seen with a fat girl like her, and besides, she needs to keep moving. Time is running out and she's terrified if she stays in one place, her past will catch up to her.

Lyn Horner drops by to discuss the anthology she's involved in.

Hi, Mel. Thank you for having me back on your wonderful blog. I’d like to tell your fans about Rawhide ’n Roses (A Western Romance Anthology.) This recent release brings together 15 authors, each with a different take on the “Wild West.” Composed of short stories great for reading on a lunch break or at bedtime, most are historical, with a few contemporary romances and one time travel for good measure.

Being a contributor to this collection of short stories has been a real learning experience for me. I thought it would be fun and wouldn’t take much time. Right. The problem is I don’t often write short stories. How was I going to tell a complete story, a romance no less, in two or three thousand words? Most chapters in my novels are longer than that. What had I gotten myself into?

I quickly learned the key is to cut out all the “fluff”. I ended up cutting at least a third of my first draft, a painful process as you know. We authors don’t enjoy dumping sentences, paragraphs, even whole scenes for the sake of brevity, even if it does improve the story. For more of what I learned from this project, check out this recent article: http://writersinthestorm.wordpress.com/2014/03/17/ten-tips-for-writing-a-short-story/#comment-24548

Now I’d like to share a snippet from my short story.

The Lawman’s Lady
by Lyn Horner

Blurb:

Marshal Trace Balfour doesn’t care for schoolmarm Matilda Schoenbrun’s straight-laced attitude. However, a few moments alone with the spinster lady makes him realize she isn’t quite what he expected. It also makes him curious. Why doesn’t she like to be called Mattie? Most of all, what would she look like without her specs and with her hair down?

Excerpt:

“Move aside,” Marshal Trace Balfour ordered, pushing through the noisy throng gathered in the street outside the Golden Slipper Saloon. Their shouts and laughter had drawn him from his office up the block. Among the crowd, he saw the local Methodist preacher, the undertaker and the owner of the mercantile across the dusty street. Several ranch hands, in town on their day off, made most of the racket.

Trace also noticed the schoolmarm, Matilda Schoenbrun. With her brown hair wound in a tight bun at her nape and wearing a drab calico gown of the same color, she brought to mind a brown jay such as he’d seen as a boy in south Texas. When she spotted him, she threw her shoulders back and narrowed her lips, looking down her bespectacled little nose, setting his teeth on edge.

“Marshal, please put a stop to this!” she demanded in a haughty voice.

“Ma’am, that’s what I aim to do.” Touching his hat to her, he shouldered aside a pair of cowboys whose laughter and catcalls almost drowned out the shrieks coming from a pair of females rolling in the dirt. Trace recognized them as saloon girls form the Golden Slipper. With red and purple skirts bunched around their knees, they fought viciously, scratching, biting and pulling each other’s hair.

He’d rather face a gang of bank robbers than deal with these snarling wildcats, he thought grimly. Almost tripping over their tangled petticoats, he managed to grab hold of one’s flailing arm and the back of the other’s tightly laced black bodice.

“That’s enough!” he growled, hauling them to their feet. One, a red-haired gal named Nellie, screeched and raked his restraining hand with her sharp nails while the other, a blonde whose name he forgot, slapped his face. Cursing under his breath, he gave both snarling females a hard shake. “I said that’s enough, ladies. Either settle down or spend the night in jail.”

Donna Fasano's latest bestseller.

I've just reviewed Donna Fasano's latest bestseller.

Derrick, part one of The Single Daddy Club.

I love Donna Fasano's romances, I'm a big fan, have been since I discovered her as an Harlequin author.

This was a wonderful romance about conquering deep set fears and apprehension.

Derrick is the guardian of his godson, Timmy, who, after his father's death, struggles from aggresive behaviour at school. Enter Timmy's teacher Anna who does all she can to help Derrick acclimatize to his new role as 'daddy'.

An entertaining read full of emotion.

Off to read, Jason, the second book in the series.

Review for a great romance.

Over the weekend I read Donna Fasano's latest release, Take Me, I'm Yours. Here's my review.

 Take Me, I'm Yours
A wonderfully woven story of love conquering all.

Lainey befriends a stranger on a beach after his grandchild is almost abducted.

When the stranger dies he bequeaths her generously for her heroism. Her new found wealth leads her to open a daycare centre allowing a lifelong dream to come true. But her wealth comes with stipulations. Enter the stranger's son, Derek, to whom Lainey is instantly attracted.

Throw into the mix Abbie, Derek's adorable young daughter and you think the story is heading for the happy ever after we all dream about. Not so, as things change dramatically when T.C., Derek's former lover and Abbie's mother, arrives on the scene.

Great characters involved in a roller-coaster ride filled with every conceivable emotion you can think of.

Loved it.

Interview with Marissa Farrar

Today Marissa Farrar dropped by to answer my interview questions.

 1. When and why did you decide to become an Indie writer?

I decided to take the indie route after I’d been published with a number of small presses but failed to see any results. There were things I wanted to try but felt I was being held back by the people who should most want me to succeed – the publishers! After seeing a couple of author friends doing well by self publishing, I decided to take the leap myself. This was in November 2010 and I haven’t looked back.

2. What genre do you write in and what genre do you prefer to read?

The main genre I write in is also the main one I prefer to read, and that’s paranormal fiction. I’ll read and write anything from paranormal romance to pure horror. As long as things that go bump in the dark are involved, I’m there!

3. Where do you sell most books, USA or UK, Amazon or Barnes and Noble?

For the most part my sales come from Amazon.com, but over the past six months I’ve watched my sales increased on sites such as Barnes & Noble and Apple. I also have big hopes for Kobo as being the next big thing in indie publishing. At the moment, the breakdown is something like 55% Amazon.com, 15% Amazon.co.uk, 15% Barnes & Noble, 10% Apple, and the remaining 5% on others such as Sony, Smashwords, and Kobo.

4. During your childhood who was your biggest influence?

My mother influenced my reading choices the most. She also loves horror and I used to sneak down stairs as a child and read her books by the light of the fishtank. Author-wise, I grew up on a diet of Stephen King, Anne Rice, Dean Koontz and James Herbert.

5. Are you fortunate enough to write full-time?

Yes, and I have nightmares about having to go back to my day job! I thank every month that goes by and the sales keep coming. I may not be rich just yet, but all I ever really wanted was to be able to provide for my family through what I love doing. I feel so blessed that I am able to live my dream.

6. If Hollywood came knocking who would you want to play your main character?

Ooh, I have a pinterest board for that question! I’d love for James Franco to play my brooding vampire, Sebastian, and Natalie Portman would be excellent for Serenity’s character. She has just the right about of vulnerability mixed with sex-appeal! http://pinterest.com/marissafarrar/my-cast-for-the-serenity-series/

7. What one piece of advice have you found the most important in your writing career?

To use a tool called Autocrit! I swear this program has done more for my writing than anything else!

8. What are your plans for the coming year?

I’m very busy! I have a new novel, Underlife, out at the end of August, and then the fourth book in my vampire ‘Serenity’ series will be out in October. I’m also planning on taking part in NaNoWriMo again this year and making a start on a new paranormal series which is tentatively titled ‘The Spirit Shifters Series’

9. And finally, if you were stranded on a desert island what 3 books would you choose to have with you?

Stephen King’s The Stand, because is huge and I love it. Bridget Jones’s Diary, because I imagine I’d need a laugh, and probably some kind of survival manual!

The first book in my 'Serenity' series is free to download from numerous sites such as Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and Smashwords!
